The San Francisco Giants are making another unlikely run to the World Series, and they have been cheered on by an even more unlikely fan: former Journey front man Steve Perry.
The one-time recluse, who hasn’t performed with his band since the ’90s and only recently started again singing in public, at Eels gigs no less, has been a famous fan leading the charge at the Giants’ AT&T Park. He leads the crowd in singing “Don’t Stop Believing,” and now the Giants seem poised to reach the World Series for the third time since 2010.
Not since Will Clark in 1989 has a man in a San Francisco Giants cap had such a profound effect on the National League Championship Series.
But that Giants championship playoff run four years ago, the Washington Post notes, “saved” the singer and “gotten [him] back into music.” Recently, he’s led Giants faithful in singing his classic song during the seventh inning stretch, and was on hand living it up during yesterday’s 10-inning 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2014 NLCS.
Welcome back, Mr. Perry. And hello again, San Francisco Giants.
