Mel Denisse explores emotional barriers with ‘aiming alone’

Like a politician for our ‘gazing alt-pop needs, it seems like every four years we cast a vote for Mel Denisse. The Nashville artist debuted under our pink digital ink back in 2018 under her former NIGHTS moniker, before returning in 2022 with a humbling tension fit for the post-pandemic era. As life’s shitstorm envelops us once again, Denisse resurfaces here with “aiming alone,” a melancholic fit of expansive and haunting alternative rock that explores the barrier — mental, emotional, and even physical — that seemingly exists between a person and everybody else. “‘aiming alone’ details wanting to be understood with urgency, while still feeling sealed off behind glass,” Denisse shares. “On the other side, the world watches and speculates, close enough to see you, never close enough to meet you. That distance becomes the point: The two realities can’t be reconciled. The outro carries that into finality – an acceptance of the lone road, and the resolve of aiming alone.” It’s very 2026.
