CinemaCon 2025: Forget ‘Spider-Men,’ Sony’s betting on ‘Beatles’

It’s CinemaCon week, which is like the San Diego Comic-Con if it were held exclusively for theater owners and press who desperately need to restore their faith in the studio system. We’re not on the ground — the dry air in Vegas makes a nightmare out of our hair — but we are keeping a close eye on all the developments and announcements steadily streaming out of Sin City. Case in point: The Sony presentation was held late on Monday night and featured several bits of big news.

We’ll start from the least newsworthy to the most. There’s an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacyquel coming out in July that will reunite Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt in the roles that made them them to moviegoers in 1999, and Sony showed off the first footage and revealed a decently gnarly poster for it. Margot Robbie will return to screens in September as the lead in Kogodana’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, reuniting the After Yang director with Colin Farrell. It’s a romantic fantasy film in the vein of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, where Robbie and Farrell venture into the latter’s memories of high school, and it sounded cute enough for Joe Hisashi, the longtime Studio Ghibli composer, to sign on and write the score. Oh, a Karate Kid movie is coming out this summer, too. Jackie Chan’s back, and so is Ralph Macchio.

You can peep the trailer for that here:

More newsworthy: The upcoming Spider-Man features had some big reveals at CinemaCon. Lord and Miller have finally started production on Beyond the Spider-Verse, a full year after they missed the initial release date, and showed off some footage alongside the new release date- June 4, 2027. If you want to read a summary of the brief teaser Sony showed off, head over to Variety.

In live-action Spidey news, Tom Holland popped up for a short video conference with director Daniel Destin Cretton while the actor was on location for another project and dropped the title for the fourth movie in the MCU franchise- Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Yep, that’s right, they’re breaking with the “Home” conventions of the previous titles to pay homage to one of the most controversial runs in the character’s history, but who knows, it might be dope.

Anyway, that will hit theaters on July 31, 2026, after which we imagine Holland will want a nice, long break from the crazy schedule he has going on for the next two years.

Finally, in the biggest news of all, Sony is making Beatles biopics — four of them, in fact. Sam Mendes will direct each feature, all of which will hit theaters in April 2028. Here’s the logline via Deadline: “Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.” Your Beatles will be Joseph Quinn (George), Paul Mescal (Paul), Barry Keoghan (Ringo), and Harris Dickinson (John- sorry, girls, he’s married!). Mendes wants this to be the first “bingeable” cinematic experience, which is some truly nauseating verbiage mainly since double-features have existed for nearly 75 years and Lord of the Rings marathons now happen at a weekly clip around the country. Good idea? Bad idea? Who knows. All we know is that we better start prepping for that long, long sit come 2028.

There’ll be plenty of news to come from CinemaCon, so strap in: It’s gonna be a wacky week.
