Look, there’s honestly not too much we can do with this one — trying to riff off of a Mel Brooks joke is like making a bad impression of Matthew McConaughy when he’s a passenger in your Lyft — so we’ll just hit the highlights. Yes, Spaceballs 2 is happening. Yes, Mel Brooks is returning as Yogurt, and Bill Pullman’s coming back to play Lone Star. Even wilder, Rick Moranis is set to return as Dark Helmet, which few would have seen coming, especially since Moranis gave up acting years and years ago. Keke Palmer’s in the cast, which is a dope choice given how great One of Them Days was. There’s still a lot of news emerging about the project, but Amazon MGM has dropped an announcement teaser for the movie, featuring the one and only Brooks sporting the best piece of movie merchandise we’ve seen in a while. A24 has to be real fucking jealous, right?
Peep it:
Man, that’s funny as hell. The title crawl, the self-effacing humor — Mel Brooks is back, baby.
For some more info, here’s Deadline:
“[T]he film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.’
Josh Greenbaum (‘Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar’) will direct from a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad, as announced in June of last year. Gad is also expected to star and will produce alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, Brooks, and Greenbaum, with Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez exec producing.”
Spaceballs 2 — which will likely have a much funnier subtitle before it debuts, even if it isn’t The Quest for More Money — will hit theaters in 2027. May the Schwartz be with you, Dear Reader.
