It’s a bird! No, it’s a plane! No, it’s the new ‘Superman’ trailer!

Superman
Warner Bros

We get a bum rap for hating on superhero movies, and we don’t deserve it. Sure, we don’t like most of what Marvel Studios has released in the last five years, but that one enterprise isn’t synonymous with “Superhero,” as much as Kevin Feige might want it to be. The animated Spider-Verse films, the Venom movies, Matt Reeves’ take on The Batman: If you’re willing to ignore Marvel (and, frankly, Sony), there’s still a lot to love in the genre that Hollywood keeps betting the house on. And Superman seems to be a pretty big fucking wager.

After poaching James Gunn from Marvel (thanks to one of the dumbest blunders that Disney could have made at that time), Warner Bros is putting a lot of faith in his ability to create feverish excitement about a new DC Universe and, in turn, to reignite their fortunes in a Barbie-esque fashion. That’s a tall order, but we think Gunn’ll measure up to it. This new trailer for the film, which Warner Bros. released on Wednesday, seems hand-crafted to be the kind of superhero movie we’ve been hoping for. Get ready for optimism, folks. We’re gonna need it.

Here’s an official synopsis for Superman:

“Your choices, your actions, that’s what makes you who you are. ‘Superman,’ DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Superman hits theaters on July 11. We keep hearing really good things about this one, so get pumped.
