Music: The Robyn Party at The Sinclair
Call ya girlfriend, it’s the lede that writes itself: No one will be dancing on their own at a Robyn-themed dance night. On Saturday (February 24), The Sinclair hosts ADVENTURE[s]‘ very own This Party Is Killing You!: The Robyn Party, which promises a full playlist of the Swedish pop icon’s catalog — “hits, b-sides, lost tracks, remixes…” — as well as those in her colorful orbit, like Charli XCX, Lady Gaga, Carly Rae, and more. Hosted by DJs/creators Russ Marshalek, Marley Magaziner, and Chris Choyce (who appeared in Robyn’s “Missing U” short film), it’s one indestructible dance party. “More than just a ‘Robyn’s hits’ party, The Robyn Party is a euphoric, make-out inspiring, uplifting, cry-dancing, life-changing night and a testament to the power of the dance floor,” reads the promo. “You’ll understand why so many sweat-drenched partygoers around the world have been heard to exclaim ‘The Robyn Party saved my life!'” Show the love.

Comedy: Liza Treyger at Crystal Ballroom
It’s another jammed-up live comedy weekend across the city, as Mic’d Up points out (as usual), and even the music venues are getting into the action. Tonight (February 23) at Crystal Ballroom, celebrated aunt, virgo, and Y2K-pop aficionado Liza Treyger holds court in Davis Square to serve up a weekend appetizer of Glittercheese. Here’s the word from Mic’d Up: “If the fact that she has an entire podcast devoted to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit doesn’t make you love the creative force of Liza Treyger right off the bat, then her stand-up will absolutely do the trick. Meshing a number of elements like observations and storytelling, Treyger executes both and more with a palpable enjoyment for sharing experiences of absurdity in her life, while maintaining the ability to connect with her audience on a highly relatable level.”
LIZA TREYGER :: Friday, February 23 at Crystal Ballroom, 55 Davis Square in Somerville, MA :: 6:30 p.m., $33 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: ‘Cruel Intentions’ at Alamo Drafthouse
The other day we were watching some TV countdown show listing the Top 10 soundtracks of the ’90s, and we were very upset that Cruel Intentions was not recognized. The OST from the 1999 guilty pleasure teen movie with a slutty cast (Sarah Michelle Gellar! Ryan Phillippe! Reese Witherspoon! Selma Blair!) had the alt-rock j-a-m-s to back it up, from The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” in the climactic scene (sniff) to contributions from Blur, Aimee Mann, Counting Crows, and others. But who could fucking forget the iconic opening shots of Phillippe’s Sebastian just cruising down a New York City highway on his way to therapy as Placebo’s still-unfuckwithable “Every You Every Me” cranked overhead. Got-damn, that intro alone should have won all the Oscars. We’re worked up just thinking about it.
Anyway, Cruel Intentions is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year (“you amaze me,” march of time) and it’s showing this Sunday (February 25) at Alamo Drafthouse in the Seaport. It’s almost sold-out at press time, but the cinema has a Monday afternoon showing for those that slept in. Here’s the wonderful word from Alamo’s Sarah Pitre: “Cruel Intentions will make you long for the days when Reese and Ryan were the hot couple, when Fatboy Slim was the jam, when two girls kissing on screen was utterly scandalous. So whether you’re waxing nostalgic for the ’90s or craving the wanton adolescence you never had, join us for a wickedly good time.”
‘CRUEL INTENTIONS’ :: Sunday, February 25 at Alamo Drafthouse, 60 Seaport Blvd. in Boston, MA :: 3 p.m., $10.99 :: Event info and tickets
