Look, we have no idea what to expect from any given Adam Wingard movie. Sure, the dude’s made You’re Next, The Guest, and the Godzilla vs. Kong movies (which were pretty fun!), but he also did Blair Witch and Death Note, so anything’s possible with one of his features. Could be fantastic, could be terrible. Yet there’s one thing — or, rather, one icon — in this trailer for his latest, Onslaught, which nearly made us stand up and cheer when we saw him. It’s the man, the myth, the legend: Reginald VelJohnson, who, much like Bill Duke in Mandy, is gracing a genre film with his presence after a decent absence from the big screen. The world is better off with him in the multiplex.
This is not a bit. We unironically “stan” VelJohnson, who was wonderful in the Die Hard movies and on Family Matters, and is basically the words “cool, chill guy from the ’90s” if they were made into a flesh-and-blood dude. So, yeah, seeing him alongside Adria Arjona, Alex Pereira, Drew Starkey, Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, and Michael Biehn in this trailer that A24 dropped on Tuesday was an unexpected delight.
Peep it:
Here’s a synopsis for Onslaught:
“When a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers break loose in the desert, a badass Army sniper must unleash hell to protect her young daughter.”
Look, it’s not like it really matters what exactly happens in this movie (is this a stealth sequel to The Guest?). All you need to know is that Carl from Family Matters is here to put an end to some shit. And no matter if this is the worst movie of 2026, we’ll be in the theater straight up cheering when our dude VelJohnson drops some one-liners.
Onslaught will blow you away on September 4.
