Wisps of perfume tangled with cigarette smoke, cherry-red lipstick smears, the nagging pinprick of heartache: Traces of romance always linger longer in the summertime. If you’re lucky, the evidence fades along with the lush green of the season. For everyone else, the aftermath might cling for another year — or six.
This sweltering summer of ’23, Layzi wades through bittersweet nostalgia on her new single “summer ’17,” a bedroom-pop slow dance with the specter of an ill-fated situationship. The new tune dropped yesterday (July 6) with an accompanying lyric video that parks Layzi at the crossroads of the Park Street MBTA station. “There’s no one quite like you / I know nobody else will ever feel the same as you,” she laments, flirting with “what could have been” and dolefully accepting what is.
“I wanted to make the song feel melancholic but simultaneously reminiscent, ‘cause those are memories I look back on fondly – but in the present time, it makes me pretty sad to think about,” Layzi tells Vanyaland. “Whether people take it [from] a relationship standpoint or not, I wanted it to make people feel reminiscent over something that they look back on fondly, regardless of the later outcome.”
