Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

MusicDentist at Faces Brewing Co.

Just when we thought the Devils were the most inspiring thing to emerge out of New Jersey these days, here comes Dentist to show off one of 2022’s best albums tonight (May 5) at Faces in Malden. The fuzzed-out Asbury Park trio craft a magnetic brand of surf-punk and indie power-pop that’s on noisy display via September’s Making a Scene, where Go-Go’s and Wavves intersect, with tracks like “Spilled Coffee” and “Don’t Let Me Catch You” pulling us right in and never letting go. Press notes tell us the album “touches on human emotions such as love, loss, grief and anxiety. At times, the songs touch on nihilism, expressing that no matter what happens nothing really matters,” and we can vibe with that on a Friday night at our new favorite venue. Salem Wolves and Strange Pains, Ted Billings’ Providence project, join Dentist for this volume-up show tonight, and we’ll be keeping track of the Devils-Hurricanes game between sets. #LGD.

Comedy: Dan Crohn at Off Cabot

Vanyaland comedy editor Jason Greenough often writes about the “comedy grind,” and few comics in Boston’s new era of laughter have hit that grind (grinded? ground? grounded? Huh…) harder than Dan Crohn. The veteran funnyman holds court tonight and Saturday (May 5 and 6) at The Cabot’s Off Cabot in Beverly for his sophomore album recording. Here’s how Greenough breaks it down in Mic’d Up: “It brings a little tear to our eye any time we see a locally-grown artist making moves in the scene, and Dan Crohn is no exception. As one of the best in the biz, around Boston or otherwise, Crohn is putting his killer comedy chops on record for only the second time, and we’re here for all of it. As will Emily Ruskowski and Gary Petersen. So you should be too.”

DAN CROHN :: Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 at Off Cabot, 9 Wallis St. in Beverly, MA :: 7 p.m., $30 :: Advance tickets

Film/TV: ‘Fear’ at The Coolidge

Apparently there’s a new film called Fear released earlier this year that no one really likes, so The Coolidge has thrown it back to 1996, the last decent year of our lives, to screen Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon’s cult classic stalker film version of Fear this Saturday (May 6) at midnight. It’s the one where Marky Mark goes crazy as a controlling (ex-)boyfriend, Witherspoon has an orgasm on a rollercoaster, and the most ’90s song ever made, “Green Mind” by Dink, appears on the soundtrack.

Here’s the recap: “First love can be innocent or intense, intoxicating… or insatiable. Nicole Walker (Witherspoon) always dreamed of being swept away by someone special — someone strong, sexy and sensitive who would care for her more than anything else in the world. David (Wahlberg) is all that and more: a modern-day knight who charms and seduces her, body and soul. However, Nicole soon finds out that her perfect boyfriend is not all he seems to be. His sweet façade masks a savage, dark side that will soon transform her dream into a nightmare. This provocative thriller will lure you past the brink of terror and keep you on the edge of your seat!”

‘FEAR’ :: Saturday, May 6 at The Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St. in Brookline, MA :: 11:59 p.m., $15.50 :: Event and ticket info
