Through his famous Tim’s Twitter Listening Party series, Tim Burgess has spent virtually every day since the start of the pandemic gathering folks around the world to come together to listen to albums. This fall, he’s got two of his own that he’d like you to listen to, and they land together. The Charlatans frontman has today (June 6) detailed a new double-album called Typical Music, a 22-track beast due out September 23 via Bella Union Records. With the word comes the 2LP’s title track, a tumbling number that has us running in place at our desks.

“OK, we all know about double albums, right?,” Burgess asks. “Historically, they’ve been thought of as indulgent. But I came to the conclusion that what I was doing was the opposite of that. I wanted to give people everything that I’d done. Every idea was treated as if it was the best thing and had to be treated with extreme care. I wanted to give everything of myself. That was it.”
Typical Music is Burgess’ sixth solo album, and it was produced by longtime collaborator Daniel O’Sullivan (Grumbling Fur, Sunn O))), Ulver) at Rockfield Studio in Wales, the site where The Charlatans recorded 1997’s Tellin’ Stories (and a place of tragedy for the band). According to a press release, it’s said to be “a collection of original material as expansive and diverse as it is rich, funky, and fun, embracing heartache, love, and free-form studio experimentation through a gamut of musical approaches spanning sparkling psych-pop, sci-fi punk, magic disco, kosmische soul, wiggy electronica, and more.”
The record’s first single and opening track, “Here Comes The Weekend,” dropped in April.
