ADULT. rally around the toilet on new single ‘Fools (We Are…)’

“We weren’t interested in melody or harmony since we didn’t see the world having that.”

That fan-fucking-tastic quote comes from Adam Lee Miller regarding one of the thought lines behind Becoming Undone, the forthcoming new album from 21st century synth-punk icons ADULT. Miller, along with longtime partner-in-grime Nicola Kuperus, will roll out their ninth studio album in two phases via Dais Records, digitally on February 23 and then into brick-and-mortar shops on March 11.

To get us jazzed, ADULT. have shared the LP’s lead single, a twitched-out EBM shaker called “Fools (We Are…).” Here’s what the Detroit duo have to say about it: “Inspiration came from performances by Paul McCarthy’s Painter to Bruce Nauman’s Clown Torture. The sculptural work of Duchamp’s Fountain to Robert Gober’s Two urinals (in 2 parts), and the album artwork of Fad Gadget’s Incontinent. The toilet is a universal motif, a shared human situation or in some cases shituation. We are all fools in one way or another, from war to waste to societal trends in ridiculous human behavior.”

True that. Check out our full archive coverage of ADULT.’s unmistakable brilliance over the years, scan through the band’s full run of 2022 North American dates below — with Kontravoid and Spike Hellis! — and fire up their this latest fit of confined chaos.
