Five films we can’t wait to see at SXSW 2019

The Beach Bum
Neon

It's March, my peoples, so we've fled the icy confines of Boston to the balmy and beautiful climes of Austin for the South-By-Southwest Film Festival. It's our third time covering the fest, and this one looks like the best we've been to yet. From new films by Jordan Peele, Harmony Korine, and Riley Stearns, to comedies from Kumail Nanjiani and the Superbad gang, there's just so much to see and do in Austin throughout the next week.

We've been fortunate enough to check out some of the biggest hits screening at the festival already: Little Monsters, Teen Spirit, The Inventor, and Greener Grass, and you should go check those reviews out if you're interested in seeing them. Otherwise, here are our picks for the five movies we absolutely cannot wait to check out at SXSW this year.

Stuber

We were on hand a few years back when Kumail Nanjiani’s The Big Sick decimated SXSW crowds, and laughed and cried right alongside them, and we’re happy to be on hand for the premiere of his latest big-budget comedy, Stuber, which is having a work-in-progress screening on Wednesday. The film sounds a bit familiar: It’s about an Uber driver (Nanjiani) who unwittingly picks up a tough cop (Dave Bautista, who nearly beat Ric Flair to death on last week’s RAW) doggedly on the trail of a stone-cold killer, and has to endure one wild night while he helps him track down the crook. So it’s basically Collateral meets Nanjiani’s brand of comedy, with a great deal of sure-to-be incredible action filling it out between the titles and credits. It’s always exciting seeing unfinished work like this at SXSW, and we can’t wait to check it out.
