21st century Yoko Ono? Fans blame Perrie Edwards for Zayn Malik leaving One Direction

Forty-six years ago yesterday, Yoko Ono and John Lennon began their week-long “Bed-In for Peace” protest in Amsterdam. Nearly a half-century later, Ono is back in the news, but for the dumbest reason possible.

Distraught fans of British pop group One Direction have reacted to the news of Zayn Malik leaving the boy band by blaming Malik’s girlfriend, Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, calling her the Yoko Ono of the 21st century. For decades, Beatles fans blamed Ono as the reason for Lennon leaving the Fab Four and the Beatles breakup in 1970.

The 22-year-old Malik and pop singer Edwards have been engaged since August 2013.

This should end well.

You get the idea. Meanwhile, One Direction will continue as a four piece — the new Fab Four? — and come to Massachusetts in September.
