Alex Goulet: “Fallin’,” Obey City

“Luckyme Records + Oliver Daysoul + Obey City is the 1992 Dream Team of modern r&b. Luckyme dished the rock to Daysoul who assisted yung Obey City on a alley-oop, backboard shattering 360 between the legs tomahawk slamma jamma that left the crowd physically and emotionally devastated. Boomshakalaka.”

Jason Trefts: “Wakin on a Pretty Day,” Kurt Vile

“A lot of current music sounds so painstakingly crafted that it loses the magic. Kurt Vile’s music is a breath of fresh air. For instance, check out this nearly 10 minute long album opener that is impossible to skip any time you put the record on. There’s been a lot of good music this year, but not a lot that will stay with me. This is the type of song I know I’ll still be playing years from now.”

Dylan Connor: “Pink Rabbits,” The National

“The imagery is so overwhelmingly bleak, it’s really great.”

Nautiluss: “Shift Al Mani (Crackboy Acid Rework),” Omar Souleyman

“This was easily one of my most played songs of the year. No matter where I dropped it, it always made the people go ham. YALLAH.”

Dan in Allston: “Untitled,” Paul Woolford

[global_player artist=”Paul Woolford” title=”Untitled” stream=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/100617368/stream” cover=”http://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000052686417-xcp0ks-large.jpg?d53bf9f” backlink=”https://soundcloud.com/frankyboy-1/paul-woolford-untitled” id=”62269″ fb=”” tw=””]

“When I think of summer 2013, this is the first tune that comes to mind. Must have first heard it on radio back in the spring while riding my bike around and I remember having to pull off the road asking myself ‘what is this?!’ The piano house thing was pretty strong this year with releases from Head High, Crue, and Bicep (just to name a few) that really threw it back to the ’90s, but this is one of the stand-out songs that really hits the nail on the head. Heavy on the 4×4, vocal samples that you find yourself mouthing along to, key stabs that get stuck in your head for days, the record was made to get the entire room feeling good and dance without giving a fuck. With this 12″, along with his album as Special Request, I think 2013 belonged to Paul Woolford.”

DJ ONEMAN: “Type of Way,” Rich Homie Quan

[global_player artist=”Rich Homie Quan” title=”Type Of Way” stream=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/83994731/stream” cover=”undefined” backlink=”https://soundcloud.com/jayy_dillard/rich-homie-quan-type-of-way” id=”62269″ fb=”” tw=””]

“I love the post-future rapper singers that have emerged in 2013 — but there’s one track that makes me feel some type a way and that’s Rich Homie Quan’s huge breakthrough. His singing-rapping style is extremely on point and the beat is somewhere between club and radio, Atlanta never sounded so playful.”

ME!: “White Noise,” Disclosure

[global_player artist=”Disclosure” title=”White Noise ft. AlunaGeorge” stream=”” cover=”http://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000038830337-0ll3pm-large.jpg?d53bf9f” backlink=”https://soundcloud.com/disclosuremusic/white-noise-ft-alunageorge” id=”62269″ fb=”” tw=””]

I feel a bit lamestream choosing a Disclosure track but I can’t ignore the palpable effect bbs Guy & Howard have had on the myself & the masses. Their debut album Settle modifies aspects of grime, house, garage, & dubstep into accessible, imaginative, & genuine pop songs. Their “Face EP” & single “Latch” hit my radar in 2012 & both were kept on repeat for months. “You & Me” & its accompanying video was a precursor documentary to my wonderful year, but “White Noise” will stand the dance club music test of time.
