Well, folks, the long wait for a woman-fronted Marvel movie is finally coming to an end. Tuesday morning on Good Morning America, Marvel Studios dropped the first trailer for Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s Captain Marvel, starring the Oscar-winning Brie Larson, which looks honestly pretty cool! It’s got a lot of modern-day Marvel’s tics — CGI deaging (just look at Samuel L. Jackson here!), the universe being the draw (we’ve got appearances by Coulson, Ronan the Accuser and plenty more familiar faces) — but some cool new things for us to enjoy. For one, Captain Marvel beats the hell out of an elderly woman! We’re pumped.
Take a look at all this for yourself:
Before we get any further, we’d like to point out that the woman that Carol Danvers beats up on the bus is actually a Skrull. Yep, you’ve read that right: Marvel’s craggy-chinned shapeshifters are who Carol Danvers and company are up against in this movie, and it’s got a fun interstellar war angle that’s ripped straight from one of the company’s most beloved Avengers storylines. Plus, we’ve got all the fun of the 90’s setting well represented here — Blockbuster Video, pagers — all we need is some pajama pants and Pogs and we’ll be all set.
Here’s a synopsis:
“Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain Marvel’ is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.”
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, and will probably make the GDP of a small country before Avengers 4 even has a title.
