There’s exactly one mainstream artist who could string together the words “whoopsie-daisy, deposition cocaine” and not sound like a loon, and it’s Lana Del Rey. Miss “Americana incarnate” this week (February 17) delivered “White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter,” a spectral psych-folk ditty that will allegedly be on her forthcoming LP, Stove. And yes, its lyrics pair a phrase as cute as “whoopsie daisy” with a nod to hard drugs.
The single is a hypnotic ode to going domestic — “yoo-hoo, dinner’s almost done!” she chimes on the chorus — but it doesn’t sacrifice any of Del Rey’s thematic calling cards. “White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter” is such a spot-on representation of the artist’s catalog that it could generate a LDR-themed bingo card: A clunky title (à la Chemtrails Over The Country Club), professing love for her “Daddy,” unabashedly low-budget visuals, and various references to nicotine patches, flower-picking, ribbons, and John Deere. Yoo-hoo, that’s at least five in a row!
