Phill Mycup lets a toxic relationship circle the drain in ‘Loving’

Phill Mycup is pouring one out for his last relationship. “Cry me a river / And imma drink it ’til it’s fucking up my liver,” he sings in “Loving,” his Afro-R&B single from late last month (August 25). The Haitian-Boston is through with investing in people who won’t return the favor — notice the stage name? — and now he’s watching the remnants of a lopsided love affair circle the drain in his new song and music video.

“It is ultimately a song that speaks of the sorrows that come with an on-and-off relationship while hopefully realizing you are a prize and don’t need to be chasing this love, or rather, lack of love,” Mycup explains. But realizing you deserve better and acting on that knowledge are two different things — and “Loving” unpacks the struggle of truly committing to the split. Combined with its accompanying Bodega-Plus-produced video, “Loving” washes away the stain of one-sided arguments, rejected calls, and forced feelings.

“Love cycle so toxic / Shit, I wouldn’t care if I lost it / Guess I gotta fuck around and drop it,” he concludes. We call that dropping truth.
