Momma’s sludgy new single is all about wanting to be a rock and roll star. We don’t think the band will be waiting very long.
And that’s due to a few different reasons. The first being the Los Angeles-born, Brooklyn-based quartet founded and led by Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten last week released a wildly infectious new tune called “Rockstar,” and it’s filling us with all sorts of Juliana Hatfield Three and Smashing Pumpkins vibes, taking us back to the carefree and detached-cool early-’90s days of grunge and slacker alt-rock. The second is Momma’s upcoming tour itinerary, which finds them supporting a pair of indie rock darlings — Wet Leg next month and Snail Mail later this year.
Get ready for liftoff.
Released via Polyvinyl and Lucky Number, “Rockstar” follows last year’s “Medicine,” and sets quite a tone for Momma’s forthcoming, as-yet-unannounced follow-up to 2020 sophomore album Two Of Me. It feels like things are happening for Momma, so much so that the mock rockumentary at play in the “Rockstar” video could very well be predicting the future. And that’s by design.
“Etta and I wanted to write a song about making it big, and becoming rockstars,” says Weingarten in a statement. “We didn’t want to take anything too seriously, lyrically or musically. We just wanted the song to sound big… We thought it would be cool to have our own little rockumentary condensed in a three-minute music video. It’s also kind of like a manifestation — I think we shamelessly want all of these things to happen in our careers.”
No shame in that game. Check out all Momma’s upcoming stateside dates, including an August 12 stop with Snail Mail at Providence’s Fete Music Hall, and rock the eff out with the “Rockstar” video after the tour jump.
