While we’ve been enjoying the comparatively silly MonsterVerse movies over here, Japan’s been digging deep with their Godzilla releases and interrogating their national character. The best of these by far, so far, was Hideki Anno’s Shin Godzilla, but the one that got everybody’s attention was the first installment of what we’ve dubbed the Steiner Math Godzilla series. That was Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One; it won Oscars and made a lot of money, and a lot of Western critics loved it. Now we’ve got Godzilla Minus Zero, which will probably repeat the whole process, barring the Academy loving Rocky from Project Hail Mary as much as we did. Those at the New York Film Festival certainly lost their damn minds when it premiered there a few weeks ago.
We’re mostly joking (though certain things about Minus One rubbed us the wrong way), and now that there’s an honest-to-Godzilla monster fight in this one, we’re losing our goddamned minds just as well! Here’s your appetizer: a new trailer for the film, straight from the good folks at Toho, which they dropped online on Monday.
Take a look:
Here’s a very fun synopsis for Godzilla Minus Zero:
“War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus.
Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.
There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
Wow, that rules. And here’s some fun IMAX boilerplate, because it’s a big IMAX release:
“Shot entirely in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production to be Filmed For IMAX, GODZILLA MINUS ZERO was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimized in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. The globally beloved monster returns to movie theater screens reaching greater and more terrifying heights, making GODZILLA MINUS ZERO a true cinematic event not to be missed.”
Godzilla Minus Zero hits US screens on November 6, with special Godzilla Day screenings in IMAX on November 3.
