Studio 52 Spotlight: Birdwatching
What Studio 52 Says: Emotional prog-pop trio Birdwatching are set to end their four-month hiatus this weekend after their last show back in November at ONCE in Somerville. The group hit pause in preparation for drummer James and his wife to welcome their second child the following month. A quick history of the band details bassist Andrea answering an online ad for a singer/guitar player posted by the other members in 2015. Switching her duties to bass instead, the three began diligently writing and the following two years saw the release of a demo and two EPs. The latest EP, August 2017’s Night Physics, is a four-track innovative gem that showcases the band’s indomitable and dynamic chops. Each song hits hard with punchy rests and expertly crafted vocal melodies between the members.
Birdwatching redefine what it means to be a tight band — each note calculatingly locks into place to form an unwavering arrangement throughout the entirety of the EP. With the hiatus definitively past them, Birdwatching look forward to a couple new upcoming releases. The first, an acoustic EP, is planned for this spring. During that time the band will return to No Boundaries Studios in North Kingstown, Rhode Island to finish up their first full-length LP they hope to have out this year.
When asked about the record, guitarist/vocalist Al Zaniboni explains: “The LP is a culmination of three years of song writing — saturated with our breadth of time signatures, anxiety-ridden harmonies, and James’ powerhouse drumming.” Considering how crisp and faultless their past releases have turned out, we have no doubts the new record will be equally spotless.
Their first show back is Saturday night (March 2) at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston with Hard Pass and Nanny as they support Dogtooth during their final show. Subsequent performances booked for the first half of this year also include an acoustic show March 23 at the Corner Art Room in Brighton, followed by Charlie’s Kitchen in Harvard Square on May 13 with the UK’s Happy Accidents.
