Blondshell invests emotional labor in ‘Heart Has To Work So Hard’

It’s been a minute since we last caught up with Blondshell, but that’s because all our friendships these days are emotionally draining and we’re busy trying to make sense of them. The alt-indie project from Sabrina Teitelbaum seems to be dealing with the same shit, and this week offers up “Heart Has To Work So Hard,” a hypnotic survey of the fallout of a fraying friendship and the tension it creates. It’s the first taste of a forthcoming new album, and the start of a new chapter after last year’s If You Asked For A Picture. The track has a magnetic allure, and its detached cool is positioned well as her controlled monotone reflects its fading sentiment. “This song is really about friendship and betrayal, getting stuck in a dynamic and letting things fester,” Teitelbaum. “It’s about pain and confusion — no one trains you for the ups and downs of a friendship between two women — but it’s also about a love so enduring that you find compassion no matter what.” Drop that bestie and go see Blondshell this fall when she plays House of Blues on November 7.
