Finally, there’s one of these Colleen Hoover adaptations that we can actually get properly excited for! Why? Well, Verity is a thriller, which is a step up from the weepier adaptations of her work. It’s about a ghostwriter who gets hired to pen new fiction for a popular author after the latter’s been injured in an accident — only for the ghostwriter to discover that, hey, things might actually not be great with her idol and in her marriage! It’s got strong talent behind and in front of the camera, with Michael Showalter directing an ensemble led by Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett.
All said, we’re kind of excited for this one, especially since Showalter’s nice and far out of his comfort zone (though Stella proved he could be comfortable with, well, anything). Anyhow, Amazon/MGM dropped a teaser for the feature, and again, it’s hard not to be compelled by it. Call your Mom and let her know that this looks pretty good!
Take a look:
Here’s a synopsis for Verity:
“Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, this seductive, psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.”
What a perfectly cromulent logline. Anyhow, Verity will hit theaters on October 2, and we’re presuming this one will do gangbusters should book clubs buy group ticket packages. In fact, here’s a free business tip for the chains: if a book club gets a package deal — a ten-ticket minimum, maybe — they should get a box of Franzia and however many Dixie cups they need. If nothing else, that’ll make for an awesome screening for everyone else in the theater.
