Can you believe we’ve already had one Jason Statham movie in theaters this year? Ric Roman Waugh’s Shelter didn’t make too much of an impact (though we heard it was pretty good), but the Statham well shall never be tapped. Seriously, we’d be willing to bet that Statham’s ghost will come out kicking and swinging should the audience continue to show up in 2150 or whatever. Yet his upcoming summer action release has something that Shelter just couldn’t compete with: a boat. Well, also the man behind the camera, but it’s more fun just to be reductive when it comes to a film like Mutiny.
It’s directed by Jean-Francois Richet, who French readers (bonjour, nous amis!) may know as Vincent Cassel’s collaborator on the Mesrine features, and who those of us in the States know as a filmmaker who takes bad ideas (remaking Assault on Precinct 13, getting Mel Gibson to star in Blood Father) and makes them into pretty decent flicks. Either way, it’s Statham on a boat — we haven’t had one of those since MEG 2 — and this trailer that Lionsgate dropped earlier on Thursday makes it look like a whale of a time.

Mutiny docks at your local multiplex on August 21. And, yes, we did have to go with an Under Siege joke, even though Steven Seagal deserves to be clowned on and shouldn’t really be mentioned in the same sentence as a dude like Statham. But credit where credit is due: if you’re doing Die Hard on a boat, well, you have to pay homage to the OG.
