Nearly 50 years ago, Gary Numan released the song “Metal” on his debut solo album, The Pleasure Principal. To this day, it’s overshadowed by the success of Numan’s single “Cars,” which is a shame, because “Metal” is an infectious work of eerie, new wave futurism. “We’re in the building where they make us grow/ And I’m frightened by the liquid engineers/ Like you,” he sings over a chugging synthline.
It’s a vibe you can’t help but catch a whiff of when listening to “EYE-CATCHING SILVER,” the latest release from PINKLIDS. The Wareham group’s third single, released today (February 20), is another chrome-gilded brush with the future, complete with frontwoman Amber Lawson deadpanning the lyrics “Am I anatomically correct?”
While PINKLIDS’ frenzied blend of garage rock and punk is far from from Numan’s sparse, calculated new wave, the song’s undercurrent of synths makes it feel like a distant cousin of Numan’s work — and dare we say, pretty “metal.” Tune in below.
