If you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks like we have (holiday break! Time to sink into the couch and catch up on all those Red Skelton movies we DVR’d when they aired on TCM in February), you might have missed that Disney’s ramped up the marketing push for Avengers: Doomsday. They’ve used Marvel fans’ seemingly limitless disposable income to generate in-theater hype and additional revenue for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Each week, a new teaser has been unveiled to Avatar audiences, spotlighting a different returning character. This week’s teaser has been by far the most newsworthy, given that it shows off the Fox X-Men, featuring Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan at the old chessboard, and James Marsden’s Cyclops letting out a massive optic blast. He’s also sporting a variation on what his comic book counterpart wore, so that’s pretty cool. No more “tight yellow spandex” jokes here, huh?
Here’s teaser one, featuring Chris Evans’ Captain America:
Next up is teaser two, which has Thor in its spotlight:
And, finally, we get some Mutant Mayhem in teaser three:
The fourth is also apparently floating around online, so if you like watching cam rips from front-row theater seats, by all means, seek it out. If not, wait until next week.
Anyhow, if you’re wondering what this teaser-centric marketing strategy might be building up to, well, we’ll hazard a guess. In just under two weeks, ABC will broadcast the College Football Playoff Championship game, and if nothing else, Disney loves brand synergy. Think of all the times you had to hear Mike Tirico or Chris Fowler stumble through an ad read for some trailer before the halftime show, and you should expect the same here.
So, nerds, get ready (nearly a year in advance) because Avengers: Doomsday is going to rock your world on December 18, 2026.
