If you were one of the lucky people who had a good 2024, well, there’s a good chance that your year wasn’t as good as Luca Guadagnino’s. The dude put out two masterpieces in one calendar year, when most filmmakers can’t even release one in their entire careers. You think he’d call it a decade after dropping Queer (Vanyaland pick for “Best Film of 2024”) and Challengers (Vanyaland pick for “Best Film of 2024 Not Named Queer“), and spend a few years trying to get that Sgt. Rock movie off the ground with Daniel Craig now that Superman made a shitload of money.
There’s no rest for the man, though, and he’s back trying to save Julia Roberts from streaming TV shows based on podcasts, which is one of Dante’s more obscure circles of hell. Hence, After the Hunt, a drama, co-starring Andrew Garfield and Boston’s own Ayo Edibiri, about academic scandals and the messy lives of professors. Amazon MGM dropped a trailer for the project on Wednesday, and hot damn, does this thing look great.
Take a look:
Here’s a synopsis for After the Hunt:
“From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, ‘After the Hunt’ is a gripping psychological drama about a college professor (Julia Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star student (Ayo Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Andrew Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come into the light. ‘After the Hunt’ is written by Nora Garrett.“
After the Hunt hits theaters on October 3, and we are hoping — no, praying — that this winds up on the TIFF line-up this year. We’ll find out next week if so, but trust us, after the year Guadagnino had in 2024, we’re dying to see what he’s got cooking with this one.
