Ok, we know the lede here is “Whoa, Channing Tatum is in a funny high-concept true story about a guy who lived in the ceiling of a Toys-R-Us for six months while evading the law, and Paramount dropped a trailer for it earlier on Wednesday,” but we really want to highlight that Roofman marks the return of director Derek Cianfrance to the big screen.
You might remember him as the guy who made Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines with Ryan Gosling, and if you were like us, you spent the last 10 years wondering whatever happened to the guy after he did The Light Between Oceans with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.
Well, turns out he did an HBO series, co-wrote Sound of Metal, and very nearly made a much better version of the Wolfman movie that came out this year before he bailed for greener pastures. Pastures, it turned out, that looked a lot like this fuckin’ great trailer.
Take a look:
Here’s a synopsis for Roofman:
“How far would you go to change who you are? Based on an unbelievable true story, ‘Roofman’ follows Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum), a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman. After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys “R” Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move. But when he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.”
Roofman crashes into theaters on October 10, and we’re hoping this is on the fall festival circuit — this is too fun of a premise, and we’d love to be shouting about how much Channing Tatum fucking rocks come September.
