As much as we love you and your gory ways, Mortal Kombat, it seems that it’s Street Fighter‘s time to shine. Seriously, this looks shockingly good compared to Mortal Kombat II — a movie that we can barely remember even though it only came out a few months ago — but, for better or worse, it looks like Kitaro Sakurai has made a movie that’s worth remembering. Yes, video game movies don’t seem to be ashamed of the fact that they’re based on video games anymore, and that’s gotta be a net positive.
Just take a look at this wackadoodle trailer that Paramount dropped earlier on Tuesday. What do we have? Color. Energy. Intentional goofiness (not “camp,” y’all). It just looks like a good time, and we have to think it’ll go down easily even if it’s a colossal piece of shit. Which it might be. You never know anymore, folks. The true test will be if the sequel’s any good, which is the new Waterloo upon which the video game movie’s advance collapses. We’re looking at you, Mario.
