Editor’s Note: The vibes of football season, eating more apples off of trees than you actually pick, and what will inevitably be droves of I Think You Should Leave Halloween costumes (sexy pig with a Nixon mask, anyone?) are feeling more within reach by the day now as we say goodbye to summer and usher in summer (September’s version). However, live comedy is a four-season jamboree, and lucky for you, we’ve got you covered. With homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlighting the calendar, the plethora of powerful comedy throughout the commonwealth continues to show up, night after night. Enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below, find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (October 1).
Laugh Boston‘s 10th Anniversary
Out of all the venues in the city and around the area, the Seaport gem has remained a steady destination for some of the best comics in the country to call home for at least a weekend. Now, to celebrate the big 1-0 milestone, they’re calling on some of our favorite homegrown talents, from Will Noonan and Corey Rodrigues to Janet McNamara and Dan Crohn, to showcase just how much the venue’s comfy and intimate stage has brought out some larger than life entertainment over the years.
LAUGH BOSTON’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY:: Friday, September 29 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., $25 :: Advance Tickets
Esther Povitsky at The Wilbur
Editor’s Note: This show has been rescheduled to November 4. As a hard-hitting star on the rise with her jam-packed arsenal of sarcasm, wildly descriptive storytelling from a personal perspective and sharp, biting takes on a parade of relatable topics, Esther Povitsky has proven to be one of the more unrelenting and unapologetic talents in the industry over these last few years. Having her throw down at The Wilbur is only one piece of evidence in the case of her being one of the strongest comics on the grind, and the room itself is perfect size to fit her ever-inflating creative balloon.
ESTHER POVITSKY :: Saturday, September 30 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 8:45 p.m., $29.50 to $39.50 :: Advance Tickets
Patton Oswalt at City Winery
You just aren’t going to get many chances to see such a generational comedy talent play to such an intimate crowd. With no shortage of social and cultural absurdity to riff on, Oswalt’s return to the city is a highly anticipated one for plenty of reasons, aside from the fact that is hands-down one of the best in the game, and based on the fact that one of two shows is already sold out, it’s bound to be a top-tier night.
PATTON OSWALT :: Saturday, September 30 at City Winery, 80 Beverly St. in Boston, MA :: 5 and 9:30 p.m., $50 to $75 :: Advance Tickets
Bill Burr at MassMutual Center
It’s the best feeling of deja vu we could think of as Billy Birthplace of Basketball returns to the city of firsts for his second go-around in front of a packed arena crowd at MassMutual Center. Only a few weeks out from the premiere of his debut behind the camera, Burr steps in front of the mic for another searing soirée of homegrown sarcasm and delightful misery that we can surely relate with a little more as the temperature starts to drop.
BILL BURR :: Sunday, October 1 at MassMutual Center, 1277 Main St. in Springfield, MA :: 7 p.m., tickets start at $75 :: Advance Tickets
