As we all wait impatiently for the never-gonna-happen Elkand reunion, new music from The Drums is here to keep us both calm and animated. The indie-pop project from auteur Jonny Pierce this week throws down a kinetic bouncer named “I Want It All,” and as the title suggests, it also arrives with the promise of a new Drums album and word of a summer North American tour.
“I Want It All” is said to encapsulate a spectrum of emotions filtered through Pierce’s tender lens, stirring an engrossing cocktail of Smiths-ian themes from self-reflection to self-awareness to self-awakening.
“The song emerged from the longing and the pain that stemmed from a loveless childhood,” says Pierce. “It is only in the past few years that I have really begun to understand what happened to me as a boy, which has helped me start to build my own bridge towards real love. The song is a declaration — that I will take what I was never given. I want the full experience of being human, which includes love and connection. I want it all.”
The Drums will take this jam and all their endless sea of hits — the indie dancefloor mainstays “Me And The Moon” and “Money” hold up quite nicely — out on the road later this year. The tour kicks off July 12 in San Diego and wraps August 18 in San Francisco, and around the midpoint crashes Boston’s Royale on July 31. Get all the dates below.
