Prepare for impact with the trailer for Wes Anderson’s ‘Asteroid City’

Asteroid City
Focus Features

We’re in the process of making a Rube Goldberg-style machine that acts as a five-alarm warning when a new Wes Anderson trailer drops, but this post will still have to suffice for a bit longer. Focus Features dropped the first look at Asteroid City, Anderson’s new film about a desert town and the aliens that came to it, earlier on Wednesday. We don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler alert to say that this looks pretty fucking cool, but check it out for yourself below. And if this is really about Ike meeting with the Nords or Greys back in the mid-’50s, well, it looks like we’ve all got some third-eye expanding to do.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis:

“‘Asteroid City’ takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. Synopsis: The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.”

More importantly, here’s the cast list, via Variety:

“The film’s main cast includes Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks, Hong Chau and Scarlett Johansson. Also featured in the film are Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Jake Ryan, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Ethan Lee, Jeff Goldblum and Rita Wilson.”

Asteroid City will collide with select theaters on June 16 before it rolls out to theaters everywhere on June 23. If you’re really thirsty for stylish adventure, go back and check out The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, because — spoiler alert — that might be Anderson’s best movie. We know, we know, it’s a controversial pick. But it’s incredible — have you heard those Seu Jorge covers?
