Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

MusicONE FALL at Faces Brewing Co.

It’s rare that we hype a band’s debut live show, but ONE FALL appear to be no ordinary band. The new melodic punk quartet out of Salem dropped a lightning bolt of a self-titled EP last month, boast some significant Boston music DNA (Razors in the Night, Giant Target, The Big Sway, Los Bungalitos), and are fronted by do-no-wrong vocalist and rhythm guitarist Helen McWilliams (Tijuana Sweetheart, Petty Morals). ONE FALL’s three-track EP, a polished hit machine recorded and mixed by Kyle Paradise, is a high-energy punk powderkeg that’s both brash and inviting, packing the type of infectious ragers that squat in your dome and refuse to vacate. Tonight (December 9) they crash a stage for the first time, sassing up new scene hotspot Faces Brewing Co. in Malden. And they do it with lovely company in former Rumble winners Zip-Tie Handcuffs and the wonderfully-named Blame It On Whitman, who we can only hope is a reference to all the proper accusations we can possibly lob at the sleepy Massachusetts town.

Comedy: Eugene Mirman and Friends at City Winery

Once we all get done singing “Kill The Turkey” over Thanksgiving break our holidaze attention quickly turns to “Jingle in the Jungle.” This Saturday (December 10), Santa bringles us a bundle as Eugene Mirman posts up at City Winery in Boston for a holiday hoedown amongst friends (and maybe even a few enemies). Mic’d Up breaks it down: “Back for another year, Mirman returns to home turf after a fairly active year on the road — and in the Bob’s Burgers camp — with a lineup full of his top-notch comedy comrades (just as the show title promises) and what we can pretty much assume is his usual tendency of pulling some sort of fast one on us with a special guest or two. Eat, drink, be merry, and show support for Mirman’s new comedy record label, Pretty Good Friends Records, in the process.” Let’s jingle to the jungle dance, indeed.

Film/TV: GRRL HAUS CINEMA at The Brattle

December is all about two moods in media: Holiday celebrations and Year in Review. For V3 this week we take a break from the former and lean into the latter as GRRL HAUS CINEMA holds court at The Brattle in Cambridge this Sunday (December 11) for its annual Best of 2022 Short Films event. Celebrating short film and video art made by women, non-binary, trans, and genderqueer artists, the showcase features two screenings that cover 28 short films, including seven locally made, spanning drama, comedy, documentary, music video, horror, animation, and experimental. “A mix of local, national, and international artists present work from a variety of disciplines: narrative, documentary, experimental, and conceptual,” reads the event bio. “With an emphasis on low budget and DIY, GRRL HAUS is a space for underrepresented voices in media arts… Each screening has equal amounts of genres so there’s something for everyone in each screening.” Hit the trailer below for a preview, and check out a detailed description of each presented work via brattlefilm.org and grrlhauscinema.com.
