The Vacant Lots keep us on the dance floor with ‘Thank You’

There aren’t many good reasons to dance these days, but The Vacant Lots are doing their best to keep us on the floor. The Brooklyn post-punk/synth-pop duo hit today (August 9) with a seductive beat machine crusher called “Thank You”, the type of song you make out with a stranger to in some dark toilet stall, and it arrives just as the Lots hit the road for a North American tour with The Black Angels this fall, and unleash the Closure LP September 30 via Fuzz Club.

And speaking of the make-out session, built-in lyrics like “Thank you for wasting my time” and “Thank you for fucking up my life” can be easily used as text message content for the morning after. Everyone wins here.

“When it’s over it’s a lot easier to look back and see things for what it is,” says Jared Artaud. “To look back and see the duality of love and hate in a relationship. Sometimes it’s a lot more devastating losing the time you had than the person you thought you loved. Nothing is worse than wasting your time.”

Brian MacFadyen adds: “‘Thank You’ was built in the framework of simplicity. It has a relentless pace driven by an angular arpeggiated bass line and drum machine pattern. A Juno-6 was used for chords throughout, a Korg M500 for the leads, and the track is brought to another level with guitars layered on top. The process of crafting this song was done entirely remotely due to the pandemic and the layers over time became more and more refined until we were satisfied with each sound source.”

It’s deadpan cool for those who care. Fire it up below, and hit The Paradise Rock Club on October 14 when The Vacant Lots play The Paradise Rock Club on that Black Angels run. Should be a good one. Meet us in the men’s room, meet us on the dance floor.
