Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: CD Rose at ICA Summer Sessions
The Institute of Contemporary Arts’ Summer Sessions series is in full swing, already welcoming Naomi Westwater and HEESU down to the Seaport. Tonight (July 22), Vanyaland familiar CD Rose bringing her modern R&B flair to the outdoor art stage by the water, showing off recent remix single “Fall Back” and last year’s seductive and sensational Take Your Own Advice album. The heatwave might keep some folx home tonight and through the weekend, so if we’re looking ahead or some late-summer action, ICA Summer Sessions keeps a steady beat rolling forward with Lilah! (July 29); Ed Balloon (August 12); Senseless Optimism (August 19); and Colleen Green (August 26). That’s one hell of a lineup.
CD ROSE :: Friday, July 22 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, 25 Harbor Shore Drive in Boston, MA :: 6 p.m., all ages, free for museum members, $20 for non-members :: ICA event page :: ICA ticket page
Comedy: Maria Bamford at The Wilbur
Maria Bamford is in town this Sunday (July 24) at The Wilbur. That’s it. That’s the blurb. What more do you need? Ok, fair enough, we suppose being one of Vanyaland’s favorite comedic voices isn’t enough on its own, so here’s Jason Greenough’s word from this week’s Mic’d Up column: “Boom goes ‘Lady Dynamite’ as Bamford makes a long overdue return to The Wilbur. Come for the jokes, stay for the deeply layered punchlines, the multi-faceted stories, and whatever else comes out of the mind of one of comedy’s most well-respected and expertly-crafted voices.”
MARIA BAMFORD :: Sunday, July 24 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 7 p.m., $29 to $39 :: Wilbur event page
Film/TV: ‘Dirty Dancing’ at Christopher Columbus Park
Alright, so this one comes with a bit of a warning: The Summer Movie Series at Christopher Columbus Park in the North End continues on this Sunday (July 24) with a screening of the ’80s classic Dirty Dancing, and there’s nothing we love more than Patrick Swayze up on the big screen reminding us how Hollywood hunk heartthrobs used to roll. But hot damn, the temps around Boston are set to hit the 100-degree mark through the day, so make sure the heat is tolerable as you head out for this screening around dusk (roughly 8:30 p.m.). Those who tap out this weekend in favor of some AC and indoor movie watching can look ahead to the series’ upcoming films: Philadelphia Story (July 31); Meet The Parents (August 7); Selma (August 14); and Batman Begins (August 21).
‘DIRTY DANCING’ :: Sunday, July 24 at Christopher Columbus Park, Atlantic Ave. in Boston, MA :: 8:30 p.m., all ages, free admission :: Event page
