Soccer Mommy offers a ‘solemn and dark’ cover of a R.E.M classic

We’ve long maintained that Soccer Mommy can do no wrong, and as we count down the months until she returns to Boston for a November 6 twirl at the House of Blues, there’s suddenly a new potential entry to her growing set lists. It’s Sophie Allison’s new cover of R.E.M’s classic “Losing My Religion,” and it’s part of Deezer’s InVersions 90s Project, which also features renditions from the last great decade from UPSAHL, easy life, Arya Starr, and others.

Soccer Mommy’s “Losing My Religion” takes on a more somber tone, and that’s by design.

“There are so many bands and artists from the ’90s that inspire me personally,” says Allison, via the NME. “I think there was a lot of good songwriting but also the production had so much range and so much creativity. I wanted to do a version on my own that was a little more solemn and dark. I wanted to keep the chords and arrangement pretty much the same to the original but just add my own voice.”

Check out a snippet of the track below, and hit Deezer for word on how to get the whole thing. Maybe, hopefully, she’ll bust it out on tour later this year.
