Leave it to Hot Chip to roll in and break it all “Down.” The English electronic-pop group return today (April 19) with a cool banger of proper thump and jump, and it sets a lively tone for new album Freakout/Release, recorded at the band’s Relax & Enjoy studio in East London and out August 19 via Domino. “We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways,” says Joe Goddard about the new record, Hot Chip’s first since 2019’s A Bath Full of Ecstasy. “There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.” It starts with “Down,” which arrives with a video directed by Douglas Hart and Steve Mackey; get into it below.
