Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, a new Vanyaland series where we help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: Linnea’s Garden at O’Brien’s Pub
There was a time when all of Allston was a rock and roll fashion show, but the rents went up and the city proved once again it’d rather have banks, bro bars, and convenience stores on every corner. O’Brien’s Pub, however, continues to fight the good fight, and on Saturday (April 2) hosts the stylistic turn of Linnea’s Garden, the Boston glam-punk trio who today drop new album Fashion Show via Red On Red Records.
“It’s about loving that person you are onstage, and trying to be that person offstage, too,” says Linnea of the new album, and on Saturday her band leads the runway on an inspired bill alongside Pageant Girls, Stars Like Ours, and Carissa Johnson, who Victoria Wasylak recent chatted with before she relocates down to New York City. Douse yourself in glitter and ambition, fire up Fashion Show via Spotify, and get more info on the Saturday night festivities here.
Comedy: Brendan Sagalow at Nick’s Comedy Stop
Yeah, sure Chris Rock is tonight wrapping up a sold-out six-show run at The Wilbur, which has drawn national attention, but holy shit are you not sick of all that nonsense? We even killed an article on The Slap midway through the week because we’re as bored of it all as you are. So tonight we turn attention elsewhere in the Theatre District, fooling around April 1 style for Brendan Sagalow’s appearance tonight at Nick’s Comedy Stop.
As Jason Greenough writes in this week’s Mic’d Up: “There’s still so much that can be said about the comedic power found in Sagalow’s debut album, Not Now More Than Ever, and that only makes his trip to Boston this week all the more exciting. Catch of one of the toughest hustling comics on the East Coast at one of the most iconic stand-up spots in the country. You will not be disappointed as Sagalow brings a modern-day relatability with a comedy intellect commonly found well beyond his years.” We might even say he… slaps.
Film/TV: Mulholland Drive at The Brattle
After everything we’ve been through lately, sitting down on a Sunday while it’s still light out and enjoying a surrealist neo-noir mystery film in a dark movie theater is just what we need to prepare for the week ahead. And that’s what The Brattle has in store as it screens David Lynch’s 2001 classic Mulholland Dr. on Sunday (April 3), with a guest appearance by Rebekah del Rio, who performs and fields a Q&A session.
Here’s a plot refresher and event description from the Cambridge joint: “In this glorious puzzle-box of a film, David Lynch lays bare the dichotomy between the dream-world vision of Hollywood and the often sordid and brutal reality. For our belated celebration of the 20th anniversary of this masterpiece by one of our favorite film artists, The Brattle is thrilled to welcome singer/songwriter Rebekah del Rio to our stage for a special performance and Q&A. Ms. Del Rio is responsible for the haunting Spanish-language version of Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’ heard in a key scene of Mulholland Drive.” There won’t be a dry eye in the house.
