Violet Skies finds an alt-pop rhythm to looking up exes on ‘The Internet’

We’ve all done it: It’s late at night, you can’t sleep, and you’ve exhausted all far corners of the internet. Suddenly something innocent enough — a song on a TikTok clip, a casual reference in someone’s Insta story, a meme RT’d — brings back a flood of memories of that ex. So you look them up.

It’s usually not a good look.

But Violet Skies is here today (January 12) with her new single, “The Internet,” and the percussive alt-pop tune suggests it’s not all bad. In fact, it can be a healthy way to check in on a former loved one without having to, actually, you know, make real contact. As long as perspective is kept close to the heart, and that’s at the core of this embracing tune about chasing old ghosts.

“’The Internet’ was written after I stayed up one night looking up an ex on the internet,” says the Welsh singer-songwriter, producer, and co-founder of sheWrites, who has recently co-penned tracks Diana Ross, LÉON, Mabel and Tiësto. “I didn’t feel compelled to call them, or speak to them, or even want to see them — but I wanted to know how they were doing. It’s a complicated mix of curiosity, caring and a little comparison too.”

She adds: “We all check on our exes (you’re lying if you don’t my darlings!!), and I wanted to write about this in a way that explained that heady combination of all these feelings + internet weirdness.”

More music is on the way from Violet Skies, offering up a batch of material she wrote while on lockdown in Los Angeles, where she splits her time. In the meanwhile, fire up “The Internet” below, and proceed to search for former loves with necessary caution.
