The red-band trailer for ‘The Grudge’ will make you reach for a barf bag

It’s a big horror trailer week, which is understandable given the fact that the genre’s last major release of 2019, the Blumhouse-produced Black Christmas remake, will hit theaters on Friday. That was to be expected, but what you probably weren’t expecting was this gnarly new red-band trailer for The Grudge, which is absolutely disgusting in all of the right ways. This one has been on our radar for a little bit, but we didn’t necessarily know that it would be this crazy in practice. Sony dropped the preview earlier on Tuesday via IGN, and boy, we kinda need to take a break after watching this one. Definitely don’t watch this one at work.

Take a look, and make sure to have a barf bag nearby if you can’t handle Rotten.com levels of gore:

So, we’re 100% down for whatever New French Extremity-style weirdness that director Nicolas Pesce has cooked up here. It’s interesting how mild the first Grudge films were in terms of their content, so the fact that the director is going so hard in the paint is very, very intriguing. We’d also be wrong not to mention how amusing it is that Andrea Riseborough is essentially playing a gender-flipped Linus Roache from his stint on Law and Order a few years back. Anyway, this looks cool, January release date be damned.

Here’s a synopsis:

“A single mother and young detective, Muldoon (Riseborough), discovers that a suburban house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death. Now, she runs to save herself and her son from demonic spirits from the cursed house in her neighborhood.”

The Grudge hits theaters on January 3, which is perfect timing in order for you to let out all that adrenaline and holiday hatred that you’ve been storing up before going back to work.
