It was a rather crude quip, but a yearning one nonetheless that first entranced us with girl in red: “I don’t wanna be your friend, I wanna be your bitch.”
That 2018 single “i wanna be your girlfriend” put all of Marie Ulven’s cards on the table, but somehow, the Norwegian songstress keeps stripping her emotions down with every entry of her new EP chapter 2. “i need to be alone.” circles the drain with a confession of caving into the lackluster living of depression. “i’ll die anyways.” details the painful process of falling out of touch with yourself. Yet, “watch you sleep.” clings to a shard of content, sleepily confessing intimate admiration. Tonight (September 10), she puts her entire kaleidoscope of a heart on display at Brighton Music Hall, shapeshifting with every turn of her mood.
We’re not sure how her feelings will shake out (yet); it all comes down to how the Allston moonlight cuts through her crystal-encrusted core. We’re about to find out.
