Get ready to cause a ruckus over Rubblebucket: The Brooklyn band has added two shows with Diet Cig to their U.S. fall and winter tour, and Boston was one of ‘em.
Rubblebucket hit up the Paradise Rock Club on January 25, followed by a gig at Brooklyn Steel the next day.
The group recently released their 2018 album Sun Machine, which presents a staggering leap from their jam band reputation. In lieu of more earthy beats, the record becomes awash with snappy synths, but keeps the brass section in working order and as emboldened as ever. Sonically, a lot of the magic was conjured from improv.
“Kal [lead singer] and I are both jazz musicians, and jazz is very much driven by improvisation-it’s about getting in touch with that inner spontaneity, where you’re channeling ideas rather than thinking them up,” says bandleader Alex Toth of the record. “There’s a lot of moments on this album that happened from us being in a trance-like zone, and coming up with weird sounds in the middle of the recording, sometimes by accident.”
