Newbury Comics and Third Man Records set up shop at Boston Calling

Back in the ye olde days of Boston Calling, if you saw a new artist you really dug, you could cross the street and fish their LP out one of the bins at Newbury Comics or Urban Outfitters in the Faneuil Hall area. Ever since the fest moved to Allston, however, snagging those albums has been a little less convenient.

In an effort to close the gap this year, both Newbury Comics and Third Man Records are bringing the records to directly to festivalgoers with onsite shops.

Newbury Comics’ tent will be onsite all weekend, offering racks on racks of vinyl and CDs from 2018 Boston Calling performers, from Field Report to Eminem and Julien Baker. An entire portion of their merchandise is dedicated to vinyl copies of Khalid’s debut album, along with a slew of his branded fanny packs. Boxes of CDs, such as Paramore’s After Laughter and Mount Kimbie’s Love What Survives, fill out the back of the tent, along with the typical mishmash of Newbury Comics “stuff” like socks, pins, and ukuleles.

A used section of LPs rounds out their selection, where you can score a used copy of Fig 14. by Human Sexual Response for $6.

Select festival artists will be stopping by the tent for free signings. Friday brought in Perfume Genius and Citizen; Royal Blood and Belly are on deck for today, and Sunday’s roster is secret until the day arrives.

The Third Man Records “Rolling Record Store” also pulled up to the festival today, stocked with a “menu” of fresh wax from Jack White’s record label and store. While fans can’t sort through the records themselves, they can peruse the goods on laminated printouts while waiting in line. The truck will be on-site today only, in conjunction with Jack White's headlining set this evening.

Records on sale from Third Man include selections from their Blue Single Series ($6), LPs of live recordings from bands like The Kills and The Black Lips ($15), and American Epic compilations (prices vary). Naturally, Rolling Record Store-branded merch is also for sale, from pins and lighters, to water bottles and 45 adapters.

The truck's "today-only" specials -- a Jack White tricolor 7-inch, colored vinyl copies of Margo Price’s Weakness, and a clear copy of The Shins/Los Lobos’ The Fear 12-inch -- are already sold out.
