Soccer Mommy makes us wish we were this ‘Cool’

In her new single “Cool,” Soccer Mommy’s Sophie Allison is busy admiring from afar: “I wanna know like her you,” she sings, “I wanna be that cool.” But the jokes pretty much on us, because we’ve been thinking that about the Nashville musician for a while now. We first caught her at The Sinclair on a they’ll-be-talking-about-this-tour-for-years bill with Jay Som and Stef Chura, and became fully entranced last month when Soccer Mommy played Great Scott with Phoebe Bridgers. Allison’s the damn coolest, and continues to show why: The Ambar Navarro-directed video for “Cool” was inspired by ’90s teen movies, and the song is a hazy ode to chilled alt-rock and guitar-pop of that era (cme for the visuals, stay for that shoegaze-y outro). “Cool” is off Clean, Soccer Mommy’s acclaimed debut LP on Fat Possum, and she’ll show it off on the road through 2018 on headlining tours and runs with Speedy Ortiz and Liz Phair (local appearances: May 1 at Great Scott and June 6 with Phair at The Sinclair). Touring with Speedy Ortiz and Liz Phair? We wanna be that cool. Featured Soccer Mommy photo by Kelsey Hart.
