‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ Trailer: This may be 2018’s most unwieldy title

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard anything about the Sicario sequel, originally just known as Soldado and then as Sicario 2: Soldado, and, to alleviate your suffering, Sony Pictures has dropped a new trailer for the film, announcing yet another title change.

So, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, we certainly hope you’re better than your title, though your new footage doesn’t seem to be all that exciting. It’s hard as fuck not to enjoy a trailer that has that same clip of Benicio Del Toro rapid-fire capping a dude on the ground, and the new cast members — Matthew Modine, Shea Whigham, Catherine Keener (!) — are all excellently deployed, but we just can’t help but think this movie probably shouldn’t have been made. Hey, Brolin’s back, though, so it can’t all be bad.

Can it?

Peep it:

First, how weird is it that countdown at the start of the trailer? Why do you need to show all the dope bits from your preview in a terrible little montage right when you’re about to watch it? We know, we know, they’re trying to counteract Youtube viewers who are planning on skipping over the trailer unless something grabs their attention, but it’s still pretty strange.

Anyways, perhaps the most heartening thing about this whole project is that writer Taylor Sheridan (author of the first film and the fantastic Hell or High Water) returned to pen the screenplay, and despite our dislike of Wind River, we can’t deny the dude’s talent.

Still, we can’t help but feel that it’s a massive downgrade to go from Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins to Stefano Sollima (best known for his work on the Gomorrah television series in Italy) and longtime Ridley Scott collaborator Dariusz Wolski behind the lens. It seems expansive and cartoonish in ways that the original wasn’t, but then again, it’s not the first film. So who knows? Maybe it’ll be great.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado hits theaters on June 29.
