New Sounds: Quicksand flex musical smarts on ‘Illuminant’, off upcoming LP ‘Interiors’

When Quicksand announced a North American tour a few weeks ago, a run that includes a September 23 stop at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, it seemed like another push and pull from the nostalgia bank. And hey, we were totally fine with that, because it gave us a chance to shout along to post-hardcore classics like “Landmine Spring” and “Thorn In My Side.”

But it turns out the nostalgia bit will only play a complementary role in the upcoming tour, as the New York City band today revealed a new album called Interiors and its tumbling crusher of a lead single, “Illuminant.”

Interiors serves as Quicksand’s first album in 22 years, and it’s out November 10 on Epitaph. The band’s original and only lineup remains intact: Frontman/guitarist Walter Schreifels, bassist Sergio Vega, drummer Alan Cage, and guitarist Tom Capone are all present and accounted for. “It was all just about being ourselves and who we were as well as who we are,” Schreifels says in a press release. “We did it for us completely.”
