New Sounds: Alvvays continue to shape one hell of a record with ‘Dreams Tonite’

Look we’ll be honest. We still haven’t gotten over the beautiful majesty that is Alvvays‘ remarkably gorgeous recent single “In Underow,” a song of the year contender that has recieved daily spins here at Vanya HQ since the day it dropped in early June. We’ve been so hung up in the track that we’re not even sure we’re mentally ready to embrace a new song from the Toronto dream-pop quartet, but after some proper reflection we decided it may actually do us some harm to ignore it and maybe we should move on and carry forward.

For journalism.

So with that, we present “Dreams Tonite,” a gentle pop floater that continues Molly Rankin’s rep as a gifted songwriter and storyteller, and another blissful brick in what’s shaping up to be one hell of an LP. And while it sounds lovely, it’s again Rankin’s lyrics that enrapture the listener. “So morose for me, seeing ghosts of me, writing oaths to me,” Rankin offers here. “In fluorescent light, antisocialites watch a wilting flower.”

Like its predecessor, “Dreams Tonite” is the from Alvvays’ upcoming album Antisocialites, due September 8 on Polyvinyl. Less than a month later, on October 3, the band plays the Paradise Rock Club in Boston as the kickoff for their North American tour. We cannot endorse these shows enough.
