Studio 52 is a community artist space located in the heart of Allston, and is proud to support the Boston music scene and local artist community.

The one downside to having a major festival the backyard of rat city is that often, touring artists book their set at the fest as their sole stop in town for the year — which for diehard fans can mean spending hundreds of dollars to see one act.

In the case of Boston Calling, however, The Sinclair usually stacks its festival-weekend lineups with afterparties featuring some of the middle-tier artists for far cheaper prices than a day general admission ticket would cost.

As foretold in the prophecy by R. Kelly: “After the show, it’s the afterparty.”

This year, the both the Sinclair and Great Scott will host two Boston Calling afterparties to extend the festival way past its noise curfew, and both venues are conveniently close to the festival’s new location at the Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston.

Across the bridge at The Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts’ own Piebald perform Saturday (May 27), while Chicago dudes Whitney wrap up the weekend festivities with a set on Sunday (May 28). At Great Scott on the opposite side of Allston, Virginia upstart Lucy Dacus caps off Friday night’s festivities and Canadian punk outfit Pup crashes Saturday’s late-night slate.

And as expected, there are some solid local picks to open up the shows, including Birthing Hips with Dacus and Choke Up with Pup.

The shows make great alternatives for cheap Memorial Day weekend celebrations, and give adoring fans the chance to see their favorite performers in the intimacy of smaller venue, sans hyped-up crowds of festivalgoers.

Now all we need is a solo Chance The Rapper gig.
