Pop singer Christina Grimmie shot and killed during post-show meet-and-greet in Orlando

UPDATE 2:49 a.m.: ABC News reports that Grimmie has died. Her representative has released a statement, which reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord. She was shot at her show in Orlando and, unfortunately, didn’t survive the gun shot wounds. We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning. A 22-year-old pop singer and former contestant on The Voice has been shot during a post-show meet-and-greet, according to reports. Christina Grimmie, known for her YouTube videos and 2014 appearance on the television show, was reportedly signing autographs after her concert Friday night at the Plaza Live in Florida when a man approached her and opened fire. She was shot three times.

Details are still emerging, but Orlando Weekly has reported that Grimmie has died at a Florida hospital. There are currently conflicting reports regarding the singer’s current condition. From Orlando Weekly: “According to an ORMC employee who prefers to remain anonymous, Grimmie passed away shortly after being brought into the ER.”

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, Orlando Police released a statement describing Grimmie as “gravely injured”.

Young singer Christina Grimmie, 22, was reportedly shot tonight at the Plaza Live during a meet-and-greet after a performance. The singer was on a bill with Before You Exit, a local pop-punk band. According to a report by WESH-2 News, the suspect turned the gun on himself and is dead. Grimmie is best known for coming in third place on the sixth season of NBC’s singing competition show The Voice in 2014.

NBC News reports there were roughly 60 people in the area at the time of the shooting, but no one else was hurt or apparently targeted.

The hashtag #PrayForChristina began trending on Twitter as news of the shooting spread on social media. On Friday evening, Grimmie posted an enthusiastic message on Facebook, where she encouraged her Orlando fans to come out to the show.
