Sometimes a special record deserves a special release party, and Quilt’s third LP, Plaza, released back in February via Mexican Summer, fit the bill on both. The Boston psych-pop band skipped over the usual rock club circuit to celebrate the album at the Museum of Fine Arts, backed by a string quartet and an ambition to give the incredible record a whole new dimension of sound.
Today, Mexican Summer just released a video interview from the MFA, filmed and edited by Ty Ueda, that includes a performance of Plaza album track “Padova”.
“We’re able to present our music in a way tonight that we’ve been really wanting to do for a long time”, says guitarist/vocalist Shane Butler. “Because our records, we put a lot into the mixture of a lot of electric and acoustic elements and we’re never able to play in spaces that kind of allow that availability. And so tonight we’re able to get a sound of Quilt that we’ve been wanting for a while, so it’ll be a new piece for us”.
The video also finds Quilt describing their songwriting process (“Writing music is very visual for me”, explains guitarist/vocalist Anna Fox Rochinski, “I can see and feel sections of songs very viscerally”), and what it’s like being back at the MFA, where they used to hang out, now that the band has developed a global following. Watch the video below, and expect to see Plaza on more than a few Best of 2016 lists at the end of the year.
