South By South Best: Here’s the lineup for the 2016 Berklee + Vanyaland SXSW party

This year, we’re taking South-By-Southwest back to its roots. No major label superstar playing a giant snack food vending machine, no golden-ticket VIP show no one can get into, and no overly-bloated industry circle-jerk organized for brand impact only.

This year’s Boston & Beyond — Vanyaland and Berklee College of Music annual party at SXSW — is all about discovering new bands and artists. The way God intended SXSW, when she created it back in 1987.

So join us on Thursday, March 17 at Brush Square Park, next to the Austin Convention Center, for a free, all-day showcase of the best new Berklee-affiliated bands and artists playing the clubs in 2016. Performing live in the tent will be Seattle guitar-rock band Great Grandpa, Los Angeles indie upstarts IAN, Allston garage rock trio Lady Pills (selected by Heavy Rotation Records, swoon-pop duo mar | co, psych-pop project Plastic Waves, and riff-mad Brooklyn rock quintet Rann. With more surprises to come.

Before hearing the sounds, here’s official word from our partners at Berklee:

Great Grandpa

Seattle-based Great Grandpa – Alex Menne, Pat Goodwin, Carrie Miller, Cam LaFlam, and alumnus Dylan Hanwright – formed in 2014. After releasing an EP, they were picked up by label Broken World Media, run by Derrick Shanholtzer-Dvorak of The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die. Said Stereogum, “five songs worth of knotty, twisted, and warm rock music that’s as melodically satisfying as it is, at times, confounding.” The group has shared the stage with Screaming Females, Palehound, and TTNG, and is working on its debut album.
